Lesson Description

I can use the mathematical structures that underpin multiplication and division of positive integers.

Lesson Overview

Key learning points

  • Multiplication can be made easier by considering factors.
  • Division can be made easier by considering equivalent calculations.
  • It can help to think of a context when doing a calculation.

Keywords

Partitioning
Partitioning is the act of splitting an object or value down into smaller parts.
Dividend
The dividend is what we are dividing.
Divisor
The divisor is what we are dividing by.

Common mistakes

  • 20 × 50 = 100, they partition the 2 and 5 to give 10 but count the zero as one of the 2 zeroes.

    Make sure that partitions are written out fully. E.g. 20 × 50 = 2 × 5 × 10 × 10 = 10 × 100 = 1000
